The airship above (the Bodensee) was a commercial airship used for passenger transportation between Berlin and friedrichshafen
Zeppelins were also used in raids and late night bombing runs (mostly against Britan).
Zeppelins during world war 1
During world war 1, 53 out of the total 115 airships that Germany deployed were destroyed. And out of the 62 that weren't destroyed 27 were damaged too badly to be operational. The Zeppelins crew had a 40% loss rate. the cost of all of the Zeppelins was 5 times the cost of the total amount of damage they dealt. After 1917 British got hold of incendiary and explosive ammunition and anti-aircraft artillery which rendered zeppelins useless |
What is a Zeppelin?
A zeppelin is a rigid airship created by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin of Germany The rigid airship had a metal framework -- 420 ft (123 m) in length, 28 ft (12 m) in diameter -- containing hydrogen-gas-filled rubber bags. The Zeppelin was first flown at Lake Constance, near Friedrichshafen in Southern Germany, on 2 July 1900. |

Zeppelin Disadvantages
-Very little armor plating -Didn't do a lot of damage -Expensive to make -Zeppelins crews had a 40% fatality rate -Accuracy is extremely low (Zeppelins would miss targets by miles) -No Coordination between aircraft -Could only fly 6km before running out of fuel |
Zeppelin Advantages
-Used for renaissance -Carried passengers from place to place -Could fly above most British planes -Were relatively quiet -Couldn't be seen without the use of a spotlight |
